Your CV There is no definitive format for a CV and every recruiter and employer has his or her own views on the way in which a CV should be presented. Points to consider

  • You have approximately 30 seconds to get your profile across so keep the layout easy to read and scan for key information.
  • Keep the CV to two or three numbered pages.
  • Use a consistent easy to read font across the CV.
  • Divide the CV into sections to cover education, qualifications, career history or experience.
  • Show your most recent experience first, working backwards in chronological order.

Remember, your CV should give the reader enough information in a professional format to want them to talk to or meet with you.

Checklist

  • Name and contact details (telephone numbers and email address on the top of the first page.
  • Skills and experience summarized in three or four lines near the top of the first page so that your profile can be quickly understood.
  • Skills, qualifications or experience included which are relevant to the job for which you are applying.
  • Relevant qualifications detailed on the front page.
  • Industry specific skills detailed on the front page. Under each role, briefly outline responsibilities, skills and key achievements.
  • Chronology of dates correct and consistent – briefly explain any career gaps.
  • Residential and postal address, date of birth, education and personal interests at the end of the final page.

Final CV thoughts

Are you happy that your CV best represents your skills, qualifications and experience? Does it give sufficient relevant information to encourage a recruiter or potential employer to want to pick up the phone for more information? Finally but most importantly, does it actually say what you want it to say about you?
